Class Action Against Symantec (Norton products)
Update: July 1, 2025 – Second distribution following Court-approved settlement of class action against Symantec for its Norton antivirus products
Following the expiry of the claim period ending on July 30, 2024, in this class action, the Court has decided to proceed with a second distribution in the amount of $5 per member who were not compensated during the first claim period.
This second distribution applies to members whose e-mail addresses are held by the defendant. It will be made by Interac e-transfer, and these members will receive an e-mail to this effect during the summer of 2025. These members will simply have to answer a question, the answer to which will be found in the e-mail sent by the Claims Administrator.

We are pleased to announce that by judgment dated February 29, 2024, the Superior Court of Québec approved the settlement agreement reached by the parties, the value of which is estimated by class counsel at over $30 million. The settlement was reached with defendant Symantec, now known as Gen Digital Inc.
To bind the parties, the Settlement also had to be approved by the courts in Ontario. That approval was obtained on May 6, 2024.
As a result, the Settlement is now enforceable and members who have not previously opted out of this class action will be eligible for compensation.
In Québec, these members are:
“All natural persons who resided in Quebec at the time they purchased and/or obtained a license allowing them to use, for non-commercial purposes, any of the following products: Norton™ Antivirus, Norton™ Internet Security, Norton™ Security, Norton™ Security with Backup, Norton 360™, or Norton™ One (hereinafter, collectively, the “Norton Products“), at any time between July 24, 2010 and June 27, 2016.”
A Notice to members was published in certain newspapers on May 31, 2024. For members for whom Gen Digital Inc. still had contact information, the Notice was also sent by email directly by the Claims Administrator, Ricepoint.
All information concerning the claims process, including the Claims Form, can be found on the Settlement website at: https://www.reglementproduitnorton.com
The deadline to file a claim is July 30, 2024.

We are pleased to announce that shortly before the trial was set to begin in the fall of 2023, the parties to this class action reached an out-of-court settlement. The settlement seeks to settle the present class action, as well as a similar class action filed in Ontario. The settlement is valued at more than $30 million.
The settlement must be approved by the Court in order to be valid. On February 28, 2024, the parties will seek approval of the settlement, which they strongly recommend, for Québec Class Members. If the settlement is approved, persons who meet the definition of the Class and who have not already opted out of the class action, are eligible to receive compensation in accordance with the terms of the settlement.
The settlement was entered into by Symantec (now Digital Inc.) without admission of fault, wrongdoing, or liability.
The hearing on the approval of the settlement will be held at the Montreal Courthouse, room 15.08, located at 1 Notre-Dame Street East in Montréal and via Teams on February 28, 2024, at 9:15 a.m.
We are pleased to announce that by judgment dated April 16, 2019, the Superior Court of Québec granted the Re-amended application for authorization to file a class action that we filed on behalf of all Québec consumers who purchased and/or licensed certain Norton products.
The Re-amended application alleges that the Norton products were defective and had design defects which rendered them unfit for the use for which they were intended, and that Symantec made false and misleading representations with respect to these products. As a result, the class action seeks financial compensation for all Québec consumers who purchased and/or licensed certain Norton products at any time between July 24, 2010 and June 27, 2016.
